What Do You Need to Specify Before Ordering Mainline Fittings and Valves?

Oct. 09, 2026

You need four things before a fitting or valve order can be correct: pipe outside diameter and wall class, the thread form your pump and filter connections use, the maximum working pressure your system can see including water hammer, and the role each component plays from pump to lateral. Miss any one and you get a shipment that fits together on the bench and weeps under load. The useful conditional: if you are replacing components on an existing system, measure one fitting and take a photograph of the thread rather than guessing, because BSP and NPT look similar and do not seal together; if you are designing new zones, specify the whole set at once from one supplier so diameters, threads and ratings are internally consistent. Our compression fitting range for PE mainlines, listed on our PP accessories page, is normally quoted from exactly that four-item list.

In short: fittings fail from mismatch, not from weakness, which is why Runnong quotes from measurements rather than part names. Size is not universal across brands, thread forms are not interchangeable, and published pressure ratings assume ambient water temperature.

Which Components Sit Between the Pump and the Drip Tape?

Position

Component

Job

What happens when it is missing or mismatched

Pump outlet

Threaded adaptor, male or female

Changes pump port to pipe thread

Crossed thread forms gall and leak immediately

Start of mainline

Ball valve

Isolation for service

Whole system must be shut to change one component

After filtration

Non-return valve

Stops reverse flow toward pump and injector

Backflow carries fertilizer upstream and drains the line each cycle

Along mainline

Compression tee

Splits supply to submain

Unclamped take-offs blow out under surge

From mainline to lateral

Compression saddle

Adds a take-off without cutting the main

Undersized saddles restrict flow and starve the zone

Direction changes

Elbows, equal or threaded, including 45 degree

Route around obstacles

Sharp bends add head loss and stress the pipe wall

Zone control

Three-way or four-way main pipeline valve

Divides or directs flow between zones

Operators throttle with the wrong valve and pressure becomes unpredictable

End of line

End plug

Line closure, and flushing access

A removable end plug doubles as the flushing port you will use every season

Two here are ordered last and needed first. The end plug is not only a closure but the drain point used whenever a lateral is flushed, and the non-return valve protects the filter housing and injector upstream. Failure patterns across this part of the system are collected in our write-up on common fitting failures.

Which Pressure Rating and Thread Standard Should You Order?

This is the purchase decision that decides whether the shipment installs cleanly, and it is made from two independent choices.

Choice

Typical options

Applies when

Consequence of getting it wrong

Pressure rating

PN10 for gravity and low-head systems, PN16 and above for pumped mains

Match to shut-off head plus surge margin, not to running pressure alone

Burst joints at start-up, or deformed sealing rings after one season

Thread form

BSP or NPT, depending on pump and equipment origin

Follow the equipment you are connecting to, and standardize across the project

Threads appear to engage then strip or weep because the pitch and flank angle differ

Pipe basis

Outside diameter versus nominal size

Confirm before quoting, since PE pipe is sold by outside diameter

A nominal match that is one or two millimeters out will not seal under pressure

Sealing method

Compression grip ring on PE body, or elastomer seal in threaded joints

Compression for PE-to-PE joints, thread sealant on all tapered threads

Grip fittings used on the wrong wall class slip; sealant on parallel threads does nothing

Temperature is the quiet exception: published ratings assume water near ambient temperature, so hot-climate or full-sun installations need margin above the rating.

How Do You Size Fittings to the Pipe and the Zone Flow?

Work from the pipe outward, not from the part number. Record outside diameter and wall thickness of every pipe first, because two pipes of the same nominal diameter routinely differ.

Step

What to determine

Typical error

How to check

Zone flow

Total liters per hour the zone demands

Sizing from pipe size alone

Multiply heads by discharge, then compare to the filter rating

Pipe size

Outside diameter and wall class per run

Assuming nominal size fixes the dimension

Measure the actual pipe with a caliper

Fitting size

Matching outside diameter and grip range

Ordering by appearance

Check the sizing table against your measurement

Head loss

Acceptable loss at peak flow

Ignoring loss through valves and elbows

Read pressure either side of each control component

Spares

Repair stock for mis-cuts

Ordering exactly the design count

Add a defined spare quantity for the three most damaged parts

When in doubt, oversize the valve rather than the pipe. Restrictive valves generate localized head loss, and the pressure drop shows up as poor performance at the far end of the zone rather than as a failure near the pump.

Which Fitting Type Should You Use for Each Connection Job?

Job

Recommended component

Why

Limit

Joining two PE pipe ends

Compression coupler

No tools beyond a wrench, reliable on clean cuts

Cut must be square and deburred or the seal will not seat

Taking a lateral off a main

Compression saddle

Adds an outlet without dismantling the line

Capacity limited by saddle bore

Splitting a line two ways

Equal or reducing tee

Direction change and division in one body

Will not absorb misalignment

Connecting to threaded equipment

Male or female adaptor

Converts pipe to thread

Thread form must match exactly

Isolating a section

PVC ball valve

Positive shut-off, visible handle position

Low-cost units are not for throttling

Preventing reverse flow

Non-return valve

Protects pump, filter and injector

Adds head loss; oversize where loss matters

Closing or flushing a line

End plug

Closure and service access

Thread form and rating still apply

Routing around an obstruction

Elbow, including 45 degree

Gradual direction change reduces loss

Intermediate angles are rarely stocked

Runnong supplies this range as compression fittings under our Yibiyuan pipeline connection line: adaptors, couplers, end plugs, elbows and 45 degree variants, tees, female and compression saddles, PVC ball valves, non-return valves and piplets. Our main pipeline valves are made from HDPE for wear resistance and supplied as three-way and four-way models where a single body has to divide or redirect flow between zones.

What Goes Wrong Most Often After These Parts Are Installed?

Failure

Root cause

Prevention at purchase stage

Weeping joint at startup

Thread form mismatch or no sealant on tapered threads

Confirm BSP versus NPT on every threaded item before ordering

Coupler slips off under pressure

Fitting specified by nominal size instead of measured outside diameter

Verify outside diameter and wall class, then match the grip range

Cracked bodies after one season

Over-tightening, or unmodified material in strong sunlight

Specify UV-stable material, avoid pipe wrenches on plastic nuts

Zone starves at the far end

Valve or saddle bore too small for zone flow

Size control components by flow, not by pipe size

Filter housing damaged by backflow

No non-return valve on injection circuits

Include the non-return valve in the base bill of materials

Leaks along the main after winter

Lines not drained, expansion of trapped water

Fit end plugs that can be removed for drainage and flushing

Nearly every one costs more to fix in the field than to prevent on the drawing, and none are visible in a product photograph.

What Should Be on the Purchase Order Instead of a Part List?

Write the order so it can be checked rather than guessed. State pipe outside diameter and wall class beside each fitting reference, name the thread form explicitly even when it seems obvious, repeat the required pressure rating per line, and list spare quantities for couplers, saddles and end plugs as separate items rather than as a hidden percentage. Ask for written confirmation that the set is dimensionally consistent and keep it with the delivery paperwork.

Runnong supports this kind of consolidated order: OEM and ODM production across two factories running fifteen production lines, and all products carry a warranty period. If a quality, packaging or delivery problem appears inside that period, our after-sales team proposes a solution, whether replacement, repair or refund, within 24 hours. Our team also handles complete-system enquiries where the fitting set, tape, hose and filtration are quoted together, described in our service overview.

FAQ

Q: Can we order fittings alone for an existing system, or do we need a whole package?

A: Components alone are fine and common for distributors and contractors replacing stock. Send measurements rather than names: pipe outside diameter, thread form confirmed from an existing fitting, and the maximum working pressure the line sees.

Q: Are BSP and NPT fittings interchangeable if they tighten by hand?A: No. They can start to engage and appear to fit, then either weep or strip under pressure. The thread pitch and flank angle differ, so the joint should never be forced to make it fit.

Q: What pressure rating should we use for a pumped main?A: Size to shut-off head plus surge margin rather than running pressure. PN10 suits gravity and low-head systems; PN16 and above suits pumped mains and lines with frequent valve operation.

Q: Do you provide UV-resistant material and custom marking?A: Our PP accessory and valve programs are produced in-house with OEM and ODM support, so material and packaging requirements belong in your enquiry rather than being discovered at delivery. Send the requirement and we will confirm what we can produce before you commit.

Q: How much spare quantity should we add to the fitting order?A: Add a defined spare line for couplers, saddles and end plugs rather than a flat percentage, since those are what install crews damage. Size it to crew count and installation duration.
